Japanese Knotweed and other invasive plant species removal

Invasive plants are introduced species that can thrive in areas beyond their natural range of dispersal. These plants are characteristically adaptable, aggressive, and have a high reproductive capacity. Adler and Allan can remove a range of invasive plant species, including Japanese Knotweed, one of the most dangerous invasive plants.

Capable of damaging building foundations and hard surfaces, plus choking waterways, causing oxygen depletion, Japanese Knotweed removal is a legal requirement – allowing it to grow is an offence under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. Japanese Knotweed removal and destruction is governed by waste compliance legislation, in particular the Environmental Protection (Duty of Care) Regulations 1991.

In general, invasive plant species of any description can have a devastating impact on an ecosystem, either on land or in waterways, and may even lead to the local extinction of native species, especially if they are already endangered. Apart from Japanese Knotweed, invasive plant examples, include:

  • Curly Waterweed – Lagarosiphon major (AKA Elodea densa)
  • Evergreen oak (holm oak)
  • Quercus ilex
  • Floating pennywort – Hydrocotyle ranunculoides
  • Giant hogweed – Heracleum mantegazzianum
  • Himalayan knotweed – Persicaria wallichii
  • Indian (Himalayan) balsam – Impatiens glandulifera

As experts in waste management and the handling of controlled waste, we are well placed to manage the eradication of Japanese Knotweed and other invasive plant species. Japanese knotweed can take several years of herbicide application and require deep excavation and we can also carry out any necessary remediation and groundworks to restore an affected site.
